I’ve actually lived to see the year 2009. I can barely believe it! The sheer astronomical number of people who I’ve outlived is simply staggering! Nevertheless, here I sit (and blog). Yeah, I know, it’s not fair. The world is not fair. Life is not fair. Why should I be here when there was an innumerable mass of more deserving people out there who could contribute so much more than I could today if they were here? I have not the answer, only this statement: it’s not fair, but that’s the point.
The fact that life is not fair is misconstrued as a bad thing. Unfairness is actually good! Yes, I know I’m sounding contradictory, but read me out. If life were fair, everyone would be dead! Why? It’s very simple, actually, and it’s because:
we deserve it.
I really don’t mean to come off as so pessimistic and melancholy, what I have to share is actually good news. However, for the good news to be heard (and understood to be good) the bad news must be conveyed and comprehended even better. So, that bad news is that if life was fair we’d all be dead, but why?
Now I establish my premise, which results in the foundation for this belief of mine.
First, the main reason why I believe that absolute fairness would result in an absolute execution of the human race is because:
There is a God, His name is Jesus Christ (The Son of God and God the Son), and He presently rules over all creation.
My primary proof text for my beliefs is none other than the Holy Bible. I hold that it is wholly credible and worthy of the greatest scrutiny (examination), as it is the inerrant and infallible truth of God to men about God and His plan for men to glorify Him and enjoy Him forever. Read that again carefully (No really, read it again if you want to understand the rest of this).
Thus, I stand upon the Bible and it’s teachings according to what they actually teach contextually and not according to what I interpret them to teach in order to have my best life now. I’ve learned to attain the accurate teachings of Scripture through what is termed exegetical hermeneutics and biblical theology (But mostly it’s the Holy Spirit who opens my eyes to see the Truth). The former (exegetical hermeneutics) is the critical and analytical exposition of the Bible which starts with an in depth look at each sentence in its original language (be it Hebrew, Aramaic [O.T.], or Greek [N.T.]), followed by a broader look at how the sentence fits into its paragraph, its chapter, its book, and finally, the Bible as a whole. During the entire process, the literary context and historical / cultural context are also examined to ensure that the meaning of the text is read out of the passage and not into the passage. Biblical theology (which differs from systematic theology), holds the premise that the Bible is consistent in its overall theological message and thus, biblical theology shows how each passage in the Bible works towards teaching the overall biblical message that there is only one God and He is the most worthy thing to be praised and worshiped.
So, now you know that I believe that the Bible teaches that if life was fair then all humans would be executed. Therefore, it’s a GOOD THING that life is NOT FAIR…because then you and I would be dead.
Why do all humans deserve to be executed (and thus making life fair for all)?
I’m glad you asked! After all, how could the Bible be so condemning? Well, it’s actually pretty simple, and it’s not because the Bible is condemning, it’s because God is condemning (and He has the right to be because He’s God). He’s right in being condemning because we’re right in being condemned. The Bible says in Romans 3:10-23 (English Standard Version):
“As it is written: ‘None is righteous, no, not one;
no one understands; no one seeks for God (Psalm 14:1-3).
All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one (Psalm 53:1-3).’
‘Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive (Psalm 5:9).’ ‘The venom of asps is under their lips (Psalm 140:3).’
‘Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness (Psalm 10:7).’
‘Their feet are swift to shed blood (Proverbs 1:16);
in their paths are ruin and misery,
and the way of peace they have not known (Isaiah 59:7-8).’,
‘There is no fear of God before their eyes (Psalm 36:1).’
Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.
For by works of the law no human being will be justified in His sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it--
the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…”
There! Do you get it? Did you see it? It’s right there in front of you and it’s worth the effort to try to understand because this is also the reason why you are going to hell if you have not been saved by Christ. Yeah, hell. It’s real and you’re going there if you have not acknowledged Christ as your Lord and Savior. However, that’s not exactly the topic of discussion right now. I’m calling on this proof text from the Bible to provide a defense for my argument that if life was fair then all people would deserve to be executed. Why? In summary, because all people have sinned against a holy and righteous God (who is holding together all matter and life at this moment [Colossians 1:16-17]). It is only the mercy of God that has kept you from death and hell up to this point and it is the grace of God that has led you to read these words and know that there is good news that greatly contrasts this bad news. As you’ve just read the bad news in Romans 3:10-23, the good news is in Romans 3:24-26 which says:
“[for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,] but are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”
Do you get it!? Oh, it’s right in front of you! The good news is that life is unfair in YOUR favor right now simply because you are alive! You should be executed for hating God and sinning against Him, the one person most worthy of loving because of His absolute glory, and yet you live because He promises in Titus 2:11 that His grace appears to everyone. Be warned though, for Jesus Christ, the ruler of all, is returning to judge you for what you have done (Revelation 20:12). If you have not experienced regret and remorse for the wrong choices in your life, confessed those sins to God and turned away from selfishness to Him, then you are lost. You will know you are His when you detest the sin you once loved and love the righteousness you once hated. When you acknowledge Christ as the Lord and Savior that He is, you no longer fall short of the glory of God but have it in Christ, being saved from the wrath to come which is over your head right now if you reject the Bible and the Jesus Christ of the Bible.
“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” Psalm 34:8
